Undisputed 3: Redemption: DVD Review

I have only watched about 10 minutes of the first Undisputed with Snipes and Rhames and have not seen a minute of Undisputed 2 but this was absolutely worth watching. This movie stars Scott Adkins who most have probably only seen under heavy makeup as Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Adkins plays Yuri Boyka one of the top fighters in the world. From what I’ve read Boyka is the villain and loses the final fight in the second film. He is like all the other fighters stuck in prison for “doing bad things”. Apparently prison fights have blown up into a media sensation and a new tournament is being held in Russia, Boyka’s homeland. Mopping floors and recovering from a knee injury (I assume from the final fight of film 2) he does what it takes to gain entry in the tournament. Once in Russia Boyka reluctantly befriends an American boxer and both are subjected to breaking rocks and beatings to try to assure the Columbian tournament favorite wins. In the end none of that really matters, what does is the awesome fight choreography and face breaking action. There is some serious athleticism on display here by all of the fighters, but Adkins really shines. This movie plays like a 90’s Van Damme film with fights that are 1000% more brutal and more legit. I hope they make a 4th with Adkins starring again. In the meantime I will have to check out some of his other work. Recommended for fight and action fans.

NFL Playoffs: Unexpected results

Can the semi-finals be any more unexpected and yet to me, boring? First, the toilet bowl winning Seahawks knocked out the defending champ Saints. Then the Jets who played less than stellar in the regular season squeak by the Colts and beat the Patriots easily. Green Bay was probably better than their seed indicated after losing a few late seasons games with Aaron Rodgers banged up. It was no surprise that they won. The Bears and Steelers, two teams I could care less about, handled their games after the bye week in different fashions with the Steelers rallying and the Bears crushing their opponents for wins. I guess I will cheer for the Packers because of their exciting offense or maybe the Bears for a chance to see Devin Hester in the Super Bowl. If you’re a fan, what are your thoughts?

Blue Mountain State

Blue Mountain State was a recent discovery that was surprisingly funny. It is a spin on the Van Wilder/ Animal House type of show. It is lude, crude, and vulgar which all adds up to pretty funny stuff. The main characters are a pair of roommates; Alex, the second string QB who really doesn’t actually want to play football and his nerdy, yet resourceful, best friend Sammy. Another good character is Thad. The hyped-up-all-about-the-team-jock who subtly injects homoeroticism in about everything he does is hilarious. The show is the basic setup of a guy who doesn’t care about anything and gets everything but it’s highly relatable and should score tons of laughs for any guy over 16. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments.

Parks and Rec: TV Review ((tags: TV)

Finally a sitcom worth watching. The show uses a mockumentary style similar to The Office and was co-created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur part of The Office’s creative team. Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, and Nick Offerman are a great comedic team and Rashida Jones acts as a sane counterbalance to the group. I have just finished the first 6 episodes in Season 1 and can’t wait to watch more. Definitely recommended.

Legion: DVD Review ((tags: Movies)

With a poster image like the one above I couldn’t help but watch this apocalyptic film. Word of advice: the poster stills are much, much cooler than anything you’ll see in the film. The main character Michael, played by Paul Bettany, does more talking than he does dispatching angels. He does well to portray himself as someone to reckon with, but as soon as things get physical the character loses credibility. Kevin Durand plays Gabriel the angel leading the mass extermination of the human race. I can’t seem to look past this guys giant grill of teeth to take him seriously. The rest of the cast should have each just served as a giant red flag to avoid the movie. They include Adrianne Palicki, Tyrese Gibson, Lucas Black, and Dennis Quaid. The writers would have been better off skipping the back story of all of these characters and instead explaining why Palicki’s unborn child was the chosen one or why God had chosen such a violent and gruesome end to humanity. In the end I think this was a potentially awesome idea for a movie that went terribly wrong.

The Other Guys: DVD Review

I had high hopes for this movie going in. I am a fan of Will Ferrell’s work and think Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers are all genius. Unfortunately, this one did nothing for me. It took me the course of three nights to watch and I should have stopped at the first. It just could not keep my attention. The first 10 minutes were great. Samuel Jackson and Dwayne Johnson make quite a team. When they depart abruptly so do most of the laughs. Individually I thought Ferrell and Wahlberg were funny in their own ways. However, the laughs were spaced too far apart and the plot of the movie just got in the way. I still have no clue who they were chasing or why. I hope someone in Hollywood gets wise and makes a prequel “The Guys”, starring Jackson and Johnson. That would be worth theater admission.

Knight and Day: DVD Review

This movie was light and fun. There were shifting alliances throughout and some great chemistry between Cruise and Diaz. Sargaard plays a boring villain that never really seems to pose a threat. The movie delivered highly stylized action, noticeable even in the poster images like the one seen above. Bullets fly, cars and planes explode, and the tongue in cheek humor is good. The action scenes are memorable but a downfall of the movie is the characters were not. Ask me in a year to name the last movie where a running bull smashed into a car and I’ll remember. Ask me who played rogue Agent Roy Miller without naming the movie and I will have no clue what you’re talking about. Overall pretty fun if not taken too seriously.

Tree Hugger Alert: Water Bobble

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR6GpZx0-nQHkUXsjyUvu72pSgClRdz477v05rpbODithpu4E4dcg

Picked one of these up from GNC last week and have to say, it really works. I have used it with multiple tap water sources and it really improves the taste dramatically. This cost me $8.00 and will not just save me green but is “green”. As you can see in the picture above one filter is meant to filter the equivalent of 300 bottles of water. Replacement filters are available to order online for $7.00. So far it seems like a pretty good product.

A-Team: DVD Review

I skipped this movie at the theater and wish I hadn’t. It is exactly what a summer blockbuster popcorn flick is meant to be. A good cast of characters creating chaos in absurd ways to track down some missing money plates. There is more plot, but I lost it at the part where they are flying a tank. Yep, I said flying a tank, the action really is ABSURD in a good way. The effects look decent except towards the end of the film when a ship sinks sends hundreds of containers falling like a deck of cards. Liam Neeson is the leader Hannibal, Bradley Cooper is Face, Sharlto Copley is Murdoch, and Rampage Jackson is Baracus. Neeson and Cooper fit their roles well and Jackson does a good job for a novice actor. For me the surprise is Copley. The only other film I have seen him in was District 9, which I liked, but was mostly void of intentional humor. I loved his Murdoch. He was crazy and on the edge and always seemed to be doing something surprising. Jessica Beil is also in the film and looking lovely. I rented the extended cut which ran 2 hours and 17 minutes but seemed to blow by quickly. In the past week I have been disappointed by a film I thought would be good (Salt) and surprised by this film I never really wanted to see. Check it out and crank up the surround sound.
